Healthy Eating for Winter Produce

Seasonal Healthy Eating for Winter Produce

Eating healthy over the Holiday Season is difficult for everyone. Every person has their own crutch when it comes to holiday sweets, or overeating with relatives.

However, winter produce is actually packed with vitamins, proteins, and plenty of nutrients to stave off sickness, and to keep you full and happy over the holidays.

The first thing that comes to mind is sweet potatoes. Easy to prepare in a variety of ways, they contain antioxidants, and are just as filling as your favorite holiday mash. They also contain lots of Vitamin A and C, as well as fiber. For a twist, mash some sweet potatoes with a splash of orange juice and a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Winter is also peak time for brussels sprouts. You may have hated them as a kid, but they are packed with health benefits and relatively easy to prepare. You can even eat them raw in salads! Brussels are a member of the cabbage family, and are excellent for digestion, which makes them a smart choice to add to a big dinner menu. They have a relatively bland flavor on their own, so pair them with some garlic for an incredible antioxidant boost.

Carrots are also a winter staple, though they can generally be found year-round. Add them to all of your salads, but also don't forget some carrot peels added to the dishes above for a pop of vitamins and a color boost!

The holiday season is a great time to stay in and prepare hearty dishes for friends and loved ones. Keep things seasonal with the ingredients mentioned above, and you'll be well on your way to staying healthy this holiday season.
